Today, I went grocery shopping.

This is currently a huge accomplishment for me. For the better part of the past two years, I’ve avoided it for two reasons: pain and anxiety. Up until recently, I haven’t been able to walk for long distances or long periods of time, so to even going into a grocery store was a big deal (the miracles of regular exercise are a topic for another post). With that pain and discomfort comes social anxiety and the need to NOT be around groups of people and narrow aisles.

This wasn’t a big shopping trip by any means, but it was enough to get things for the next few days. We’ve been really bad about cooking at home, and money being what it is in the few days before payday, it’s definitely healthier and cheaper to buy stuff to make ourselves. Normally I like to make a list and map out a few recipes, but I decided to go with a couple things in mind and just fly by the seat of my pants.

I gave in to a couple of cravings and bought baby carrots with ranch dip and a tropical fruit mix, which were the healthiest things we brought home. We also grabbed some chicken, pork chops, hot dogs, mac and cheese, margarine, milk, flavored water, lunchables, hot dog buns, cereal, tortilla chips, and some soda for my husband (I drink it but in small quantities so I don’t buy 2 liters often).  It’s enough to get us until payday and then I can go shopping at Aldi, which is actually my go- to place for groceries because it’s so cheap and simple.  Dillons is okay, and they take a local check which was the plus in tonight’s grocery shopping equation, but I always go back to Aldi.

We picked a great time to go tonight, too, because the store was relatively quiet. I need to make a mental note that Sunday evening is a prime time for easy grocery shopping. With every shopping trip, though, there’s something that irks me, and tonight it was the young couple blocking the aisle because they were too busy making out to grab their stuff and go.  Who knew that salad dressing and soup could get two people so hot and bothered?

Side note: not sure if it’s the start of college or what, but there are young couples eating each other’s faces off everywhere.

Best part of the whole shopping trip was coming out of the store in only minor discomfort and realizing that I’m that much closer to having normal mobility. I even said to my husband, “See that? See what I did there? That’s right….I freakin’ walked for a whole grocery trip.”
